Welcome to Somnia's fifth ATP & EMP Meme! This is the place to be if you're interested in the game's setting, if you're unsure about who you'd like to bring or if you just want to check out the vibes. Remember that the EMP is open to all, and you don't need an invite to participate in the slightest!

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR THIS APP ROUND: With September marking the start of the game's second arc, there will be a setting shift and thus we'll be skipping a TDM/app round for that month to better situate our current players. With that said, our next app round after this one will only being in October, so I've decided to uncap the game and thus the number of apps coming in this round and going forward (at least until where I feel like I can handle it).

IN SUMMARY, If you have interest in apping, now might be a good time if you do not wish to wait three months for the next round, or risk the game getting capped again!



Dates to note are as follows:

- RESERVES: June 12th
- APPS: June 19th - 24th

An opportunity for players who do not have invites to post their interest in receiving one will be available on the TDM as a mod comment to reply to. Current players may extend their invites, and if you don't know anyone in the game, the mod will make a decision to send an invite (note that this does not guarantee one). Just like our EMP, you do not need an invite to participate in the TDM, either— only to reserve and app.

Brief Info: So extremely earnest necromancer/academic character whose player I'm flailing at up there? ^^^ Cam is his cavalier other half/childhood bff/just super normal about each other.

The cavalier-necromancer partnership is part of the book's society -- cavaliers are the physical to their adept's mental/magical skills -- but both Camilla and Palamedes are incredible at what they do. Cam is a fierce fighter, athlete and acrobat, doesn't adhere to typical norms of how or what a cavalier should specialize in and prefers aggressive strategy -- including weaponized underestimation -- and is unfailingly devoted to Pal, though she'll criticize him fondly: she's also the one who remembers the (pen/ruler/flashlight/food) he inevitably put down or forgot all about.

She operates on her own, decisive moral compass, and is extremely intelligent and academic -- collaborating with Palamedes in thinking out his theorems, a role not all cavaliers play. She can be blunt (and snarkily witty!) but cares very deeply for the people she's allowed into her life and beneath it all feels very deeply as well.

Vessel Type & General ideas: She's totally a Seraph. Being a cavalier is a giveaway for being a Offering, and Seraph fits her so well, particularly as her House's motto is (Six) for the truth, before solace in lies and the elements of instability to/weakness to lying, justice- and mission-oriented-ness and being a defender/protector are all right on the nose (as well as flame references for ...reasons). I've got a moodboard! Which may evolve differently if there's a Palamedes to not be grieving the loss of, but ... look, a lot of things happen in these books.

She's the one I'm very set on. She suits the setting a bit more and especially if there are canonmates...

There are other loud voices who I play (and in the first case, have more recently) who it's always possible I might throw into the TDM, especially if anyone's interested.

CHARACTER
Name: Teddy Roberts | tedandroses
Canon: Original
Brief Info: No crazy OC universe here; they're from our world. Queer (and genderqueer) musician/activist/nerd from the coalfields of Central Appalachia.
Teddy loved nature and their family growing up, but -- for lots of reasons, some very obvious -- was desperate to get the hell out.
Got the hell out for college; got punched in the face by a combo of homesickness and more education about the socioeconomic/political/historical nuances of the region; formed a political, Appalachian-music-informed folk punk band called Scrip and toured with it for a while; had an escalation in his temporal lobe epilepsy that forced him to take it down a notch; returned home, which was probably inevitable.
After a few years dealing with all that, they're back on their feet. Keeping themself busy, finding community with other marginalized groups in the area, making music. Trying to figure out how to stage a minor revolution or ...maybe just help their community and tell its stories.

Vessel Type & General ideas: I definitely think a Token. I'm split in a few different directions for Teddy.
- Geomancer would be thematically appropriate on a very deep level (no pun intended), since. Ancient mountains. Coal. Wanting to make change. You get it. And, the vibrations of the earth, singing/acoustics... there are things to do with that.
- Runecaster -- Teddy's such a nerd about stories, language, the way literature and song are actually the same thing, bards...etc -- I love the vocal harmonics and paperiness qualities mentioned as examples. Languages are also a thing that fascinate Teddy (and yes, they make bad puns). This could be a winner, though I do love a very lowkey theme being pulled out by transformation.
- Beastkin is an obvious one, but I'm thinking it's too surface. They love nature, and they're defensive of systems and harmony between them, but their affinity isn't with animals specifically.


CHARACTER
Name: Grantaire | theobverse (PB swap in progress)
Canon: Les Mis
Brief Info: Grantaire! Meet this skeptic, nihilist, super ADHD (...my diagnosis but I'm NOT WRONG), semi-functional-alcoholic eternal student. He's an artist and a fighter (savate et canne) and he knows all the good places for everything in Paris. He will ramble for pages worth just to set up a string of a few terrible puns. (His nickname, and the way he signs off on things, is "R" because "Grantaire" sounds like "big R" in French.)

He is SMITTEN with Enjolras, the leader of the student activist group Les Amis de l'ABC (Abaisse), so he is desperate to be a part of their actions despite being kind of "meh" about politics and Enjolras being extremely meh about him. He volunteers intensely (and at least seems to get sidetracked at it); he's bitter and passive-aggressive when he's not trusted the next time.

TLDR (spoilers for Les Mis????): while the barricades are falling, he makes a stand for the Republic when he could've shut up and been unnoticed, and they end up dying together in a grand conclusion to Hugo making a lot of "historically good friend" allusions.
HOWEVER: I tend to play Grantaire as he is for most of the novel: flawed, covering-his-feelings-with-performativity and flaunting his vices, but also desperate to belong and to be needed. That inner strength and loyalty is there, but it's hard to access beneath all the self-sabotage.

Vessel Type & General ideas: Just as Teddy seems obviously to be a Token to me, Grantaire seems to obviously be an Offering. My instincts say Daemon or Satyr, but I'm leaning Daemon . First, Enjolras is so often described as angelic or godlike, and their traits are so stereotypically pure vs defiled, that it's a funny nod. Also, one of the big differences to me between the two seems to be the flight/fear and gracefulness of the Satyr types and the wrath/outbursts of the Daemon types.
Grantaire is absolutely impulsively annoyed, not afraid: people actively have to tell him to shut up and stop being antagonistic. So...yeah probably Daemon!

I think that could actually be really fun.

Plus in canon he's pretty distinctly not actually much of a seducer -- he just likes to make other people think he's getting it every day of the week. (Now, it could be funny to switch that up BECAUSE of the transformation, but!)

Weh, okay, but I kinda really need this?! I'm not sure if you are familiar with HSR canon, but I'll assume not and basically say I could quote you while describing Aventurine to someone and people who know the canon would never suspect it was originally about a completely different character.

So while I am gung-ho for Camilla as you've been debating her for a while on top of the opportunity with a Palamedes, if you do decide to put Grantaire on the TDM, drop me a link because I'll definitely tag him with Aventurine even if you aren't apping him. (Usually I focus on the characters that are gonna be potentially apped so they have samples and more groundwork laid for them arriving in game when people post more than one character because I get sidetracked and overwhelmed, but I will make an exception for this.)

Oh Harry would vibe intensely with all the above. But ESPECIALLY Grantaire. Harry is from a francophone country haunted by the shadow of a failed communist revolution and an impending second revolution that’s almost certainly doomed to fail. He’s haunted by the imagery of student communists dying, also.

Canon: Fate/ Strange Fake
Brief Info: Grown Up Child Soldier without an identity who was experimented on between being sent to war zones is taken in as an experiment by the mastermind behind the Holy Grail War in the US. The plan: see what happens when someone with no identity, no desire beyond decent meals and a place to sleep, and no summoning relic is told to participate in the a Holy Grail War.

The idea was that the youthful looking soldier, Sigma, would summon a Lancer. He summons something else and is given the opportunity that will certainly change the course of his life and probably break the Holy Grail War entirely.

Vessel Type & General ideas:

In short, without spoilers, the Servant that Sigma summons is basically a sky whale and has an ongoing motif of mariners and figures who were lost at sea. Making him an Aquamancer or some kind of Merrow would be fitting. I'm open to ideas, however, because Sigma is a self described Spellcaster who's favorite spell is to pull out his gun.

The idea is multi tiered here. By the end of season one of FSF, Sigma makes a definitive Choice. I'm obviously pulling him from before that. Besides that, he's building his character from the bottom up and seems to be taking cues from various places, ranging from Monty Python to a Religious Zealot of an Assassin to a mistreated little girl.

I'm curious to see what happens.

I'm also curious about who he'll adopt and nominate himself bodyguard for. The possibilities for what will happen are endless.

Name: Hornet
Canon: Hollow Knight: Silksong
Brief Info: Hornet is daughter of wyrm and weaver, growing up in a kingdom succumbing to infection spread by an angry goddess. She is princess of Hallownest and has lived hundreds of years watching it fall victim to the Radiance. Her journey through the kingdom involves a lot of trust and acceptance about things that were, doing her best to protect Hallownest and guide the Knight along the way. Though the infection has been defeated, her kingdom saved, she finds herself captured by bugs from a far away land. There she is trying to unravel the mysteries of the bugs of Pharloom. At current she faces the Cogwork Dancers, ready to descend into the heart of the city.

Hornet is, for what it’s worth, pragmatic and logical. She will take things in stride but be curious and willing to research and investigate. She isn’t one to rush into a situation, considering her options quickly, and with resolute confidence. She is polite, if not stoic and a little cold at times, her time alone while the other bugs of Hallownest wandered mindlessly to the infection had certainly made it difficult to learn to trust and connect with those around her.

I have not beaten Silksong, so she will be pulled from where I was in game which was starting the Cogwork Dancer fight.

Vessel Type & General ideas: I feel she would fit the Token more so than the Offering. She may have had doubts about her form at one point (she is Weaver but does not possess some qualities that would distinguish her) but she had had many years to hone her skills and crafts with tools to prove a formidable opponent. She had no doubt in who and what she is, and magic would just be one more tool in her belt.

I have not decided on what magic. Artificer would suit her skills with crafting, but the Beastkin would also work for her. I am open to ideas!

I don't know anything about this series other than I think the aesthetics are so awesome (someone was considering bringing a character from the canon at one point, and I thought the designs were so cute and yet still very on target with the overall mood!) and would love to have her in game.

Brief Info: A fraud and a conman who nonetheless is super dedicated to helping people with their problems. Reigen has a tendency to talk too much, get in over his head, and spaghetti his way out of trouble by either talking too much again or relying on his actually talented friends (a bunch of middle schoolers and One Shut-In Adult). He's what the youths call a boyfailure. He's annoying. He has a big heart. He genuinely believes everyone should only pursue the things that make them happy, and one day even he, a bottomless pit of fraudulent nonsense, will achieve real happiness...... One time he got a spirit puppy and it almost sucked out his life force but he misses it terribly anyway.

Anyway, he's a creature of habit so he'll inevitably try to set himself up as a consultant for something or other and help people with their weird-ass problems, but he'll also fumble spectacularly about making real connections and so on. He doesn't know how to do that shit.

Canon: Zero Escape (Zero Time Dilemma)
Brief Info: Junpei is a college dropout and Totally Normal Guy, except that he has time traveler's wife disease and can throw his consciousness around spacetime. He does not enjoy doing this, and yet he continues to do this. He collects sneakers, which is why he's so broke he wears Hanes 6-pack v-neck tees exclusively otherwise. Sometimes he is Rowdy and most of the time he is Moody and all of the time he grouses and whines about collecting besties eternal but he's first in line for the unbreakable bond machine anyway. yaaay!!

All things considered he will immediately assume this is another Murder Experience with a Secret Mastermind and be weird and bisexual about it for. A while. Hard to say.

At his ZTD canonpoint he is edgy and embarrassing about it. Guy who keeps insisting he's done(!!) playing the hero(!!!!!) as he continues to play hero constantly... that's him.

both of these picks are fantastic! im a huge fan of the zero escape series (Akane Kurashiki GIRL THAT YOU ARE!!) and jumpy from ztd is such a fun and crunchy canonpoint... and reigen of course is one of the funniest guys to EVER do it. there's a reason he won all those polls! i'd love to see what sort of cons he gets up to!!

Listen, this kid probably will keen onto the fact he's a fraud. I can't help that.

That's because he admires the criminal element deeply. His crew is all thieves, assassins, bounty hunters, and other elements willing to fight, steal, sneak, and con their way into defeating the apocalypse.

Hi all I had popped in here a couple times before and had even hopped into the TDM briefly with Rumi from KPDH (sob i apologize for dropping the ball so hard, life and work decided to beat my ass), but tossing in my hat for a different character I've been interested in revisiting in a game setting:

Name: Euntae Hwang
Canon: Unholy Blood
Brief Info: Euntae here is a detective who specializes in cases involving vampires, which are known in his version of Earth - he is considered one of the best, with a pretty high solved case rate, and he just seems like a really nice dude, if a bit of a quirky weirdo.

What most don't know, however - is that he's a vampire himself, having allowed himself to be turned in order to protect his little sister from his turned parents and their sire, and stop them from further hurting others. That particular incident is the launching point for a lot of his baggage and guilt - though you wouldn't really know when you first meet him. He's a master of masking that guilt, seemingly carefree and unpredictable in order to give himself an advantage.

The old Spider-Man technique of hiding strategy, stress and other pesky emotions and potential weakness under smartassery, if you will.

Currently, he's working toward his own personal goals of trying to pinpoint and stop the vampire outbreaks before they get worse, alongside Hayan (a pureblood vampire and the protag of the series proper and his eventual love interest) - but unknown to her until much later, he's working on a timer.

Whoops. (thankfully with the transformations regardless it would be moot, so we don't have to worry about that particular problem)

Vessel Type & General ideas: I could be really mean and slightly on-the-nose with making him a Bloodwright considering the whole vampire thing. It would be an interesting twist away from doing something fully monstrous - though I'm definitely open to other options/suggestions!

Brief Info: The warden of Fontaine's underwater prison, the Fortress of Meropide. He's really just a guy who fought tooth and nail to get where he is and now he enjoys a more comfortable life. A loyal man at heart with good morals, but also someone who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty if need be.
Vessel Type & General ideas: I had apped here a hot minute ago, but the timing ended up being really terrible for me unfortunately. I'd love to try again. I originally apped him as Lycan, which I think stil suits him well for all the obvious dog motifs he has. I am, however considering other options with this second application. I am considering Daemon considering all the Hades motifs and details implied into Wriothesley's character and story. I am also considering Kimera because Wriothesley has, both, dog and shark imagery associated to him. I think also Kimera would be interesting to handle the different identities given his back story of claiming a new identity for himself.

Brief Info: The youngest Void Hunter in history, Miyabi is a fox thiren with the intent to destroy all ethereals and to protect New Eridu. She's a rather curious girl with a penchant for avoiding paperwork and calling even the most mundane tasks as training. She is someone who speaks her mind to the point that she severely lacks decorum or the realization of certain social cues.
Vessel Type & General ideas: I haven't set my heart on anything exact, but she's definitely going to be a Token. I'm considering Pyromancer or Beastkin for her though.

Brief Info: The sole member of the FBI's Puzzle Research Division! He's uh...a bit flighty in terms of the supernatural, but he's very determined to get the job done. Well, unless he ends up launched into another dimension far, FAR away from the job in question. But that wouldn't happen, right? Right.
Vessel Type & General ideas:
I'm REALLY leaning towards Token. As much as I'm fond of him losing his mind, this dude got blasted with the "go crazy go stupid" beam and Got Better. His ass is NOT losing himself to instinct.
As for specifics, I'm still kinda vague about that. Beastkin and Aquamancer would be really fitting considering he just got back from Nightmare Snow Town, which has the Gnomes That Live In What Little Nature Remains. On the other hand, Runecaster is close enough to puzzles? Right? I think he might have some fun figuring that out...

Name: Alex Mercer
Canon: PROTOTYPE
Brief Info: Presenting the protagonist of an old-ass 2009 action/horror video game with a twist™: Man wakes up in morgue with no memories, gets shot at so he freaks out and runs away with nothing but an overheard name, and discovers he has monstrous abilities when he rips a black ops soldier in half and assimilates their biomass (and memories) into himself. Accidentally releases a grotesque zombie plague into a now-quarantined Manhattan Island put under harsh martial law, then tries to fix his mistake as he figures out what the fuck happened to him.

He does explode many helicoptors in the process. And reconnect with his sister, Dana. And at the end of his revenge quest, it turns out he's not Dr. Alex Mercer, PhD with amnesia, he's just the blacklight virus who ate and genetically replicated his corpse when it entered his bloodstream as it got riddled with bullets. The original Dr. Mercer worked in Gentek on the Blacklight project, and saw a purge happening. So he smuggled out a vial of blacklight as insurance and ran for it. But when he was cornered by Blackwatch soldiers in crowded Penn Station, he smashed it open out of spite anyway and promptly died.

Yeah, not much to live up to. And then he had to save Manhattan from being nuked lol, but he made it out. Also, Alex constantly wears the same stupid outfit - jeans and a button-up shirt, hoodie, and a leather jacket on top of all that as well. With a slutty, unbuttoned popped collar because it's what Mercer was wearing when he died. No identity issues here.

Vessel Type & General ideas:
I haven't played in a game for a hot minute, so def looking forward to the TDM! Thinking Alex as an Illusionist could be interesting to explore, considering that he's a writhing viral biomass cosplaying as a dead man who thought he was human. The face and clothes he wears habitually and identity he clung to was never 'his' to begin with, and he has the memories of everyone he's consumed jumbled up in his head, yikes. And since he would become an actual human once pulled into Somnia, that's extra interesting!

I would love to explore Alex's burgeoning morality post-game, and what it means to really interact with humanity. So if this game is interested in a baby viral abomination who only ever wears a leather jacket with his hood up and doesn't realize he looks at people like he wants to eat them...... hi hello 👋
