Behold, an opportunity to gather.
Welcome to Somnia's fifth ATP & EMP Meme! This is the place to be if you're interested in the game's setting, if you're unsure about who you'd like to bring or if you just want to check out the vibes. Remember that the EMP is open to all, and you don't need an invite to participate in the slightest!
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR THIS APP ROUND: With September marking the start of the game's second arc, there will be a setting shift and thus we'll be skipping a TDM/app round for that month to better situate our current players. With that said, our next app round after this one will only being in October, so I've decided to uncap the game and thus the number of apps coming in this round and going forward (at least until where I feel like I can handle it).
IN SUMMARY, If you have interest in apping, now might be a good time if you do not wish to wait three months for the next round, or risk the game getting capped again!

Current players may extend their invites, and if you don't know anyone in the game, the mod will make a decision to send an invite (note that this does not guarantee one). Just like our EMP, you do not need an invite to participate in the TDM, either— only to reserve and app.

Name: Bartholomew "Bart" Henry Allen II / Impulse
Canon: DC Comics; Most likely pulled after "Impulse Point" in the 2023 run of 'The Flash'
Brief Info: A time-displaced teenage speedster from the future who was raised in a virtual reality, and is the epitome of "the horrors are never ending, but I remain silly". He's had one good year of his life where he had relative stability, but then his mentor/adopted father died, and it's all been a living hell since. Just a constant stream of world-ending crises, friends and family dropping like flies around him, resurrecting just to die again, getting killed and brought back himself, getting unmade by reality and clawing his way back, just to realize no one remembers him and a good chunk of friends and family got wiped from reality as well. Then, fighting tooth and nail to hop universes and timelines to find where they got thrown to and drag them back to reality with him. It's been a lot, and on top of that, he's part of a superhero legacy that he feels he's failing to live up to. Trapped between wanting to not give a shit what his mentors, Wally and Barry, think of him anymore, and desperately wanting not to be the screw up Wally says he is, and that he often feels like.
Meanwhile, he's shoving down his own anxieties and trauma (it's totally healthy, don't worry about it) to be the goofy, energetic ray of sunshine his friends expect and need him to be, because someone has to keep them together and remind everyone that not everything is shit all the time. This isn't the 90's, god damn it, we can't all be emo at the same time!
Vessel Type & General ideas: I'm most likely going with Token for him. The Chronomancer just fits him very well, both as a replacement for his speedster abilities (which already dip their toes into time-altering abilities) and because, even for a speedster, he's had a lot of experience with time shenanigans. Though if I went the Offerings route, I think I would go with a Satyr, cuz while it doesn't fit him as well, it could be very fun to play with. Plus, I love an excuse to do "monster" designs for characters.
Re: EMP
He's had a similarly rough life with grief and loss and also mistreatment.
That said, a possible clash is he's a sweet kid but pretty comfortable with killing.

One idea I already have is for Bart to find an old, rundown arcade and try to bring it back to life, so the teens all have somewhere they can just hang out. Decorate it old YJ hangout style, with personalized graffiti on the walls, just anything to really make it theirs.
And I think Bart is going to be in for an interesting time when he finds out just how many people here are comfortable with killing or even enthusiastic about it. Probably gonna be a particular shock when it comes to adorable Lil'Cato. It'll be one thing if he "jokes" about it, something else to actually see him just going at it
Man, with the Teathering and memory-sharing, imagine these two bonding over being forced to grow up and be 'the responsible one', after a good chunk of their family died/got caught in another dimension. Then being de-aged back to a kid and having to act like that all just didn't happen. Plus, picking up unhealthy coping mechanisms revolving around being more like their parental figures/mentors (Lil'Cato pretending to be his own Dad and imagining the crew to comfort himself/Bart trying to be Barry or Wally because "Bart is unreliable" and Barry and Wally are what everyone really needs and wants) and being let down by the father figures/mentors that they looked up to their whole lives.
They just have some weirdly specific trauma in common that they avoid talking about, because how do you even begin to explain all that to friends/family without just making them worried about you?

And yes the let down is so similar and huge. Wally instilled a whole complex in Bart and Avocato turbo fucked up. Cato's hurt not just bc of the lies but bc if he was crown prince Avocato should have known Lord Commander would target him eventually.

I also just noticed Cato is a Chronomancer, too. So if I go with that for Bart, that's something else that would be fun to explore. Like, the different ways they utilize those powers, and exploring Cato's own trauma over time-stuff, and being stuck with time powers.
Cuz I've been rolling around an idea for how I would play that. I know one of the big drawbacks of the power is that it's supposed to require immense concentration, but I kinda like the idea that for Bart, it's like in the comics, where using his powers was as unconscious as breathing. He just has such clear intent and confidence that it should work, that it just does what he's aiming for it to do. But then the ease of use makes the other issues that come with being a Chronomancer so much worse.
Like, it shouldn't be that easy to use for a reason. He's definitely going to unconsciously overuse it, to his own detriment, and worse than that, it eventually comes to him so easily that it reacts to his emotions. So like, when he's calm, it's safe and works great, but if he gets too excited, too anxious, or too angry, it just goes off chaotically.
Instead of struggling to learn to carefully concentrate and use it properly to get it to work at all, he has to learn to stay calm and cool-headed to keep it under control, or else he's a walking threat to himself and everyone around him, whether he means to be or not.
Given Cato's trauma with the time shard and his own experience with the Chronomancer powers, it would be interesting if he were the one to confront Bart about it, have the serious talk, and help him with his struggle to keep it under control. Because he'll definitely just be trying to deal with it on his own at first, and keep it under wraps, cuz god damn it, he can't let himself be the problem that everyone else has to fix again.

And like, Megumi and Bart both having issues with not caring about their own safety, or whether or not they even live or die, would be interesting to explore. 'The self-preservation instinct is stored in how much I don't want other people to be sad if I die.' XD
They both need to explore that crap more. Bart, in particular, has only talked about it with one friend who he'd known for maybe a month. This poor kid, who barely knew Bart, had clearly never heard about depression and was not at all equipped to have this conversation, was just "Wow...that's weird...You're a weird little guy." And it remains a problem (he's died about three and a half times now, and very recently had to literally be held back from sacrificing his life for his Grandfather), but is never really addressed again.
