[ Another point in the "for" category as he forms his estimation of this girl. She's less impulsive, less, well, stupid than a lot of the boys he went to Iraq were at the same age. (And, arguably, smarter than himself at 23, when he'd ventured out into the nearby town for a little flavor and ended up on a hospital cot with an IV in his arm 3 days later.)

He can't wait forever, or he'll have bigger problems here. It takes about fifteen minutes post-ingestion for something sugary to make blood glucose numbers start ticking back up, and without his meter, he has no way to tell just how bad it is. But this feels like it's starting to get bad; even if he's not dizzy, he has that weird lightness in his hands and feet, the hot flashes followed by cold. He'd guesstimate maybe 60, 70 milligrams per deciliter right now, and it'll need time to turn the drop around.

He also feels kind of weird about lying in wait and letting someone else test it first—but maybe they can find someone who already has, and, in absence of that, there are still clues their ancient ancestors evolved the skills to detect. ]

You're right. Same with the water here. Don't drink it unless you absolutely have to. [ Freddie frowns at the fruit at her feet. ] We should walk around, see if we can find someone who's tried it. And if we can't, we still have to eat eventually. [ Or sooner than just 'eventually', in his case... ] There are some signs that things are edible or inedible. If they smell bad or bitter, or taste bitter, that's probably because of toxic compounds. And obviously don't... eat any seeds or pits. What's your name?
