MURMURS FROM LAST NIGHT

strange things happen in the night. maybe you drink, or dream, or get high as a kite, and it's hard to hide it! especially when we're all collectively connected in a way! the rules are quite simple! you may even know them by now.

We had plenty of cruder shit, too. It mostly depended on whether you grew up rich or you grew up poor. I had the joy of experiencing both.

Ah, a well-rounded upbringing. And which did you enjoy more?

They each had their benefits, but I enjoyed being well off much more than my time on the run. It's colored by childhood as much as money, I guess, but I had everything a girl could want, and my adoptive mother was alive.

There's this clear line between the two lives, and one version of me was much happier than the other.

There's something to be said for regular meals, at the very least.

They'd gotten it in their head that I could birth a god that could free them from their hellish prison. Like I said, crazy.

People cling to the impossible when they're desperate, and they'll pull down whoever they have to in order to climb up.

Did they catch you?

No, but I was about to hand myself over before Sleep grabbed me. They kidnapped my dad. I wasn't about to let him die because of me.

An admirable impulse, but I feel certain he wouldn't have wanted you to do that.

I know, but I couldn't just let it happen. He was my dad, and he was all I had.

I understand.

But that doesn't sound like a pleasant outcome for you.

I don't think the outcome of my life was ever going to be pleasant.

So tear it out of their hands. Don't go quietly. Take as many of them with you as you can.

They're fucked no matter what happens. I'm here. I'm the key to their freedom, and now they'll spend the rest of their miserable lives in a world that wants to kill them. They will never know peace or comfort. They will never see the sun. They will never be able to leave their sanctuaries without feeling terror.

That's my one comfort being pulled here: they're doomed.

Ah, and doesn't everyone love a happy ending? It sounds as though they'll get exactly the suffering they deserve.

This may be an awful place, but it provides some of us a second chance.

Yes. There's no reason to tell ourselves that since the alternative is death, or some other terrible fate, we ought to be grateful for even such a place as this.
