Oh, so you like the weirdos. The outcasts. The people society shuns. [ The smile in her voice grows with each one. ] Do you invite them all to live at the Nest?

yeah why wouldn't i? that's how it's always been. people tend to forget how much they're worth. sometimes they need a little reminder.

[Whoops. Excuse him as he back pedals the hell away from that particular train of thought.]

? i mean if they want to stay here, who would i be to deny them? though there were a lot more back then. dublith might not have been as big as man-hatten but it was still on one of the major train routes. you'd be surprised what sorts of people find themselves that far from central

You like to remind people what they're worth. [ Oh, he's such a soft sin. There's an immediate sense that Sharon is smiling, small and curled, something warm traveling across the connection. ]

How long have you been collecting outcasts?
nestingdevil: βž₯ <lj user="nestingdevil"> (β™  } cold as all matters at hand)

[He can't believe he's being crucified.]

[Again.]

because people forget. short lives that they are, humans have this bad habit of thinking they aren't worth anything. that whatever was handed to them, whatever cards they were dealt, is because they deserved it. nothing more than that, shar. don't forget who you're talking to.

[It's a light scolding. Nothing too serious, but something for her to keep in mind. He's not good, not by a long shot.]

eh. i've tried before, but people tend to draw their own conclusions more often than not. the ones that do stick around usually have a bit more sense. wrong and right don't matter, not really. besides, who's to say what's good and what isn't? they always try to put some sort of hierarchy to greed when there wasn't any from the start.

the ones before, though. they stuck around for a few years, after i got them out of the lab i found 'em in.

Greed has a big heart, it seems. [ In her eyes, Greed is good. Or maybe her perception of good and evil is incredibly warped. It is ]

You saved people from a lab? [ He says found—she knows better. ]

[They've both got their skewed sense of morals. Birds of a feather are sin together.]

[But she can stop that train of thought right now, thank you very much.]
wouldn't know. i've never had one. [He might now, pumping away blood in place of a 'Stone. That still hasn't changed anything.]

eh it was a while ago, and it's not really my story to tell. but they were chimeras. [A word that means something completely different here, but to him, it's personal.] the military had a habit of hiding all their dirty secrets where most wouldn't find 'em. it's when you transmute a human being with an animal. pretty cruel process for the most part and usually, they don't turn out well at the end of it.

[He'd taken care of the rejects, of course. A mercy, all things considered.]

You've got one. [ She wouldn't like him so much if he didn't—and his heart bleeds for the little man, for the outcasts and the freaks. For the people who don't know their worth. He can deny it all he likes; she'll stick to her belief. ]

I assume transmute means, like, crossbreed or... DNA-mashing, or something equally horrifying?

[Feel that vibration? Feel that static? Yeah, no. She's got him pinned down, even if he will never admit it. Why is it always kids that can see through his bullshit so easily?]

[Truth, seriously, fucking help him.]

you've got most of it. it's done through two, connected transmutation circles. on one, the animal and on the other, whatever poor bastard they knew wouldn't be missed, or could be easily swept away as a war casualty. [Ah, yeah. He's bitter about that.] sometimes, the body doesn't take it, though. and they lose all the humanity they've ever had.

[ ...holy shit. ]

That's fucked up. [ is it any worse than what she's done to people? ] Why would anyone do that to another person? What did they gain? What did they do to the ones who didn't—shit, I dunno, meet expectations?

[There's a pause from him. A long, lengthy pause, and he doesn't bother hiding it from the tether. Amestris had a long history. And all of its rottenness, all of its horrors, had been orchestrated by his. His, named by the same tattoo he'll always carry.]

[No one is innocent, not really.]

because they could. [A simple answer, short and to the point. Still, he continues.] there was always a war, shar. that's been amestris's biggest achievement. and advancing the military, especially on the state-alchemist level, was key. so, they wanted to see what they could do, what their limits could be. making soldiers that had more enhanced instincts.

[Among others things, but he'll save her the details.]

don't think i have to spell it out, do i? [He hopes he doesn't. She's seen enough horrors in her time. He doesn't need his world's to add to her list.] if it's anything, i took care of some of them before we left. dol could sniff them out better than the rest.

[ More enhanced instincts. A shiver races through the connection, along with a familiar spark of anger. She hates so much of every world. People never stop being awful, never stop hurting others to advance their own twisted goals. ]

What made you want to save them, Greed? [ Was it his greed, his avarice? Or that heart in him he likes to deny? Sharon thinks that maybe, just maybe, he saw some of himself in them. ]
